DeFi Analytics 13th December 2024

This week's edition of our Crypto DeFi Analytics. We highlight Ethereum's increased network demand and the change in hourly average gas fees burnt per block and excess blob gas fees associated with this. An insight into DeFi activity is marked by Uniswap V3 transaction volume on Arbitrum and liquidation activities across Aave and Compound.

Ethereum Gas Market

ETH Gas Fees - Spikes in gas fees have been steadily increasing in frequency with two instances of gas fees burnt per block over 1 ETH. This marks four major spikes this month. Alongside this, hourly average cost to transfer ETH (21,000) remained elevated peaking at $9, as network demand drove up transaction costs.

ETH Blob Gas - Blob gas usage remains constant at 400k. Hourly average excess blob gas per ethereum block also remains high between 70-80m. This week we see less drawdowns, suggesting less opportunity for Layer 2's to avoid peak surcharges associated with data uploads to the ETH network.
